According to the 2022 national census, there were 55,719 homeless people in South Africa - 44,512 were roofless and 11,207 were in shelters. Another estimate by the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) estimated that approximately 200,000 people were street homeless in South Africa. The reality is the accurate statistics on the number
of homeless people in South Africa is non- existent but we cannot ignore the growing number of people who contact us for shelter.
The FHS house currently takes 45 women and children at its max capacity. Our Affordable Housing Project aims to accommodate 100 women at a time and will act as a buffer to women transitioning from living at the shelter becoming fully independent. Upon getting back on their feet and finding employment, we noted that many women
struggle to reintegrate into society and find themselves back at the shelter. This is mainly due to the threat of financial instability, rental costs, utilities and the overwhelming cost of living. Life in Johannesburg is costly and more needs to be done to ensure that the women don’t transition back into the life they came from. This realisation birthed the
Affordable Housing Project.
Instead of taking the women and children out of our system when they move out of the shelter, we are extending our support in the form of a safe haven that is affordable. The women will transition from FHS into our Affordable Housing Project. The structure is intentionally different as it will offer standard AHP units with own key(lock-up-and-go)
consisting of a bedroom, kitchenette, bathroom and toilet. This ensures that the women still benefit from FHS, but with a gist of independence.
This project is a long term commitment and a lot needs to be done. We are welcoming partners that wish to come on board in making the is a reality for the many women who desperately need our services.
Please do not hesitate to contact us for partnership inquiries.
